We are the Green Revolution Team taking part in the Lexus Enviornmental Challenge. Our task is to spread awareness of global warming and greenhouse gases! As a group of middle school students, we hope to get as many people as possible to view our site. To help us succeed in our goal, please show your friends and family this website! Thanks! If you want to learn more or just want to contact us, you may e-mail us at: greenrevolution6@gmail.com |
Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun. The glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter. The point is that greenhouse gases work like the glass panels in a greenhouse! Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the blanket of greenhouse gases. As it reaches the Earth's surface, land and water absorb the sunlight’s energy. Once absorbed, this energy is reflected back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but much of it remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to heat up. If we keep spewing CO2 and pollution into the atmosphere, the Earth will continue to heat up! |
What happens when the Earth heats up? Why should we care? Well, for one, the ice caps are melting, causing a rise in the sea levels. Many cities and large areas, where millions of people live, will be underwater. Also, millions of species will go extinct in the new climate, for example, the polar bears. The coral reefs, that many species depend on, will be ruined! Global warming will also increase tropical diseases and storms! Diseases, like Malaria, will be spread to a bigger portion of the world. Tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, and many more types of storms will happen more often and even bigger then what is happening now. To prevent all of this from happening, we need to develop a greener life-style!
